The American Dream Homeownership Program's goal is to educate families and individuals on the various aspects of homeownership. Assisting families to become homeowners will not only benefit the individual families who are able to
purchase a home, but will also benefit neighborhoods and communities. There are two aspects to the program:
Home Ownership Training
OAI has implemented an intensive homeownership training course. The curriculum covers issues such as: goal setting, household budgeting, credit counseling, home financing, maintenance and upkeep and many other topics
related to homeownership. The first round of training courses were held in West Plains with ten families completing the training. Training sessions will also be held in each of the counties in the OAI service area.
Affordable Housing Construction
OAI has completed the first two homes of the American Dream Project. These energy efficient homes will be sold to moderate-income families who have completed the homeownership training. It is estimated that 15 to 18
new homes will be built and sold to low to moderate-income families in the service area within the next four years.
Down Payment Assistance Grants
The American Dream Home Ownership Program now has $10,000 grants available to help with down payments or closing costs on a purchased home. Buyers must be able to acquire a loan from a MHDC approved bank and be under the
80% median income guidelines. Buyers do not have to be first-time homeowners. For more information about MHDC approved financial institutions contact OAI.
